French Foreign Minister

Somehow, it seems fitting that this should have come to light so close to Simon Wiesenthal's passing.

Betsy Newmark has an incredible story about the French Foreign Minister asking if British Jews had been killed during the Holocaust. When reminded that Britain had not fallen to the Nazis, he then asked if British Jews hadn't been deported. This is, let me reiterate, the French Foreign Minister. This happened in Jerusalem at Yad Vashem.

I'm having trouble believing the story, but if it is true it is a remarkable commentary upon French provincialism. Haaretz claimed the story (originally printed in a French journal) was confirmed to them by someone who was on the tour of Yad Vashem.
