Syrians Arming Civilians?
This WorldNetDaily article says that Syrians are planning to withdraw troops but taking other measures to deal with the pressure for withdrawal from Lebanon. It's all "unnamed source" stuff:
Despite Syria's announcement today it will withdraw troops from mountain and coastal areas in Lebanon, Damascus has been arming local supporters and preparing troops for possible confrontations, sources in Lebanon told WorldNetDaily.and:
But security and opposition forces on the ground in Lebanon told WorldNetDaily Syrian forces have been distributing weapons, including AK-47 rifles, to pro-Syrian groups. They said information has been received that Syrian troops have been preparing to suppress the civil uprising and will respond heavily to any violent action on the part of the opposition. The withdrawals are supposed to occur under an earlier agreement, the Taif Accord. Syria says it's prepared to "work with" the UN to implement a Security Council resolution.
Opposition leaders last week called for an "uprising for independence," demanding Damascus withdraw its troops and urging the current pro-Syrian government to step down.

I worry this is going to end ugly. I just can't see a peaceful resolution, involving Syria, on the horizon.
How ironic that the Bush Administration criticizes Syria's sponsorship of terrorism in Lebanon, while quietly circumventing the Constitution by "extraordinary rendition" and endorsing Syria's tactics of torture.

Just as was the case with Afghanistan, if you play with fire, you might get burned. We created a monster over there, and paid the price a generation later.
I fear what the present policies foretell for our children's futures.
I like your views. I'll be back.
