She Collected Her Thoughts

Hey, I've got a riddle for you!

If Cheney is Bush's Doberman, and Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) is God's Rottweiler, what is Maureen Dowd? That's right! She's New York, NY's baying beagle, nose to the ground, chasing a Republican conspiratorial trail in perpetuity - in a circle. A very very tight circle. She's hearing her own echo.

Hat tip to No Oil For Pacifists (not that I'm really sure that I wanted to read this). Maureen Dowd has now detected another very odd parallel between the US and the Vatican. That's right. "Selected, not elected."

We, the provincials, can only read in stricken amazement as she elaborates the awful truth:
The éminence grise who had long whispered in the ear of power and who had helped oversee the selection process ended up selecting himself. In Cheneyesque fashion, he searched far and wide for a pope by looking around the room and swiftly deciding he was the best man for the job.
Honestly, doesn't the New York Times have an employee counseling plan or psychiatric insurance coverage? Shouldn't there be an intervention of some sort? Haven't they heard of tough love or the papal election procedure? This woman is apparently staring at the walls and hallucinating marauding Republican elephants casting their lethal mind rays and hypnotizing Cardinals in the Vatican. Or maybe I've got it wrong. Maybe, just maybe, she believes that it was God's Rottweiler who hypnotized those Evangelical oafs in Kansas into voting for George Bush. And this is not the only delusion haunting her:
And just like the vice president, the new pope is a Jurassic archconservative who disdains the "if it feels good do it" culture and the revolutionary trends toward diversity and cultural openness since the 60's.
Actually, I hate to break it to her, but no mainstream religious leader is comfortable with the "if it feels good do it" culture. For some reason, all of them, just all of them, insist that we have duties to other people that transcend our own desires. And even worse - the military rejects the "if it feels good do it" doctrine as well! Also cops, fireman, lawyers, judges, doctors (particularly ER doctors), teachers and businessmen. Clearly it's a vast rightwing raving militaristic conspiracy to dominate the world, which can only be warded off by donning your tinfoil hat. I wonder if Maureen is feverishly buying Alcoa stock?
W.'s Doberman and John Paul's "God's Rottweiler," as the new pope was called, are both global enforcers with cult followings. Just as the vice president acted to solidify the view of America as a hyperpower, so the new pope views the Roman Catholic Church as the one true religion. He once branded other faiths as deficient.
Oh my lord!!!! Tell me this stupid woman hasn't called Catholics cultists! Way to advance the Democratic agenda, Maureen. Way to go! Is she on Karl Rove's payroll or what? You just know this column is going to be included in the Republican party's campaign flyers for 2008. Honey, did you expect the pope to be a Buddhist? A hypocrite?

But no - now she reveals all. All she wanted was for the new Pope to be pro-choice. Was that too much to ask?
Cardinal Ratzinger did not shrink from advising American bishops in the last presidential election on bringing Catholic elected officials to heel. He warned that Catholics who deliberately voted for a candidate because of a pro-choice position were guilty of cooperating in evil, and unworthy to receive communion. Vote Democratic and lose your soul. "Panzerkardinal," as he was known, definitely isn't a man who could read Mario Cuomo's Notre Dame speech urging that pro-choice politicians be allowed in the tent and say, "He's got a point."
Okay, okay. Let's just set the record straight. That's wrong. That's a distortion. See this Washington Post article (not a paper known to be ardently loyal to the Catholic lobby) for the truth. Cardinal Ratzinger wrote a confidential letter to the US Catholic Bishops saying that there was a valid theological justification for a faithful Catholic to vote for a pro-choice candidate. And he probably did it because one of the US Catholic Bishops had pretty much said there wasn't any justification - in other words, the truth is exactly the opposite of what Maureen is claiming. Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, opened up the electoral field for US Catholics:
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the Vatican's arbiter of doctrinal orthodoxy, has given Roman Catholic voters leeway under certain circumstances to vote for politicians who support abortion rights, U.S. Catholic officials said yesterday.

"A Catholic would be guilty of formal cooperation in evil, and so unworthy to present himself for Holy Communion, if he were to deliberately vote for a candidate precisely because of the candidate's permissive stand on abortion and/or euthanasia," wrote Ratzinger, who is head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican department charged with ensuring fidelity to church teachings.

But Ratzinger added: "When a Catholic does not share a candidate's stand in favor of abortion and/or euthanasia, but votes for that candidate for other reasons, it is considered remote material cooperation, which can be permitted in the presence of proportionate reasons."
And here is Maureen's deepest fear:
The Republicans can build their majority by bringing strict Catholics and evangelicals - once at odds - together on what they call "culture of life" issues.
Gee, I'm glad that hasn't happened before. Probably it was only JP II's ardently pro-life, pro-euthanasia stance that prevented it, Maureen. Just think of how badly the Dems could have lost the last election if Pope Benedict had been controlling the world and the US military! (Not that the Dems did lose the last election of course! Oh no. We all know that it was those Diebold machines. I wonder how Karl Rove managed to fix the papal election?)

You know, if we can't stop people like Dowd from making the Democrats look ridiculous, we really are going to have to give up on the Democrats and start up a new party. Because your average self-respecting American is not going to vote for a party that is capable of getting hysterical about a Catholic pope who believes Catholicism is the true faith. They sort of respect him for that.

What a terrific post. I'd like to link to it and give you a trackback, but you don't have trackbacks. I'll Link anyway, good job!

I have been seeing your posts at other Blogs and finally decided to visit after GM's recommendation excellent post and yes the democrats have been sputtering since the election but it looks like gutless Republicans are giving them some hope.

Thanks, GM. It's appreciated.

Alnot, I agree that the R's need to pull themselves together and get working on the real problems. So do the Dems, although when I heard that quote from Pelosi (the real problem with Social Security coming between 2050-2100) I heard the theme from Titanic softly playing in the background.

Saw Maureen Doud on Bill Maher this weekend and she had relatively little to say. As in nothing. On the other hand Alan Simpson filled the silence with this lovely quote: "The size of the area they're going to drill in the artic is like a sparrow fart in a typhoon. I don't know what everyone is so worried about."

That's hilarious!!!!

Hi M-O-M!
Enjoyed this post (and the comments) immensely.
