They Have A Plan, Stan

(This is not news. If you want news, go to No Oil For Pacifists.)

In the wake of France's historic rejection of the proposed EU constitution, fear and horror have swept Europe. The population, reacting in fear and despair at even the prospect of a French "non", had already begun stomping small baby animals. The German youth are wearing Lonsdale and stomping black dolls. The number of their beast is 88 - the eighth letter of the alphabet repeated twice. HH. Heil Hitler. How can the barbarians be kept from the gates of Europe?

Fear not! The EU has a solution - France must repent:
The French have rejected the proposed Constitution by 55 per cent of No-votes with a surprisingly high 70 per cent turnout. Therefore, the Constitution is no longer a formal proposal.

The Constitution was proposed under the rules of the Nice Treaty which demand unanimity for change.

The only possibility to revive the document is via a new proposal from a new intergovernmental conference, which decides by unanimity – and includes the support of the French government.

This could happen on 16-17 June when EU heads of state and government meet for their next fixed summit in Brussels.
United they stand, face the cameras, and vow "This shall not stand!"

Comments:
Yes, why should a matter as small as the 'voice of the people' get in the way?

Clearly a mistake. The warnings are clear - under no circumstances should the humanism of Europe be frustrated by the voices of the people.

I suppose only time will tell us whether this is just a comedy or a tragicomedy.

My favorite explanation they use for the vote is that it was against Chirac and had nothing to do with the EU. It's very elitist to to discount votes because you feel the voters didn't take it seriously or just didn't get it. It's not always the case I know but in general I think voters are smart enough to know what they are doing and that they will get it right in the long run. Even French voters.

Tommy, I think there is a particularly strong case to be made that French voters did get it. The proposed EU constitution became a best seller - hundreds of thousands of copies were sold in the bookstores.

I have read the EU Constitution. I wouldn't vote for it. It establishes a much stronger central power which is very insulated from the population of Europe.

I think the elitism of the Eurocracy is one reason the French voters did reject it.

Granted I don't live there and therefore haven't followed the EU as closely as I could have. But I travel there a lot and work in an industry that is affected by what goes on over there. It has appeared to me that the EU was setting itself up to not have to answer/respond to any group of citizens.

I think this is the first test. I am hopeful but not optimistic really.
