Robertson The Unreverent
Okay, I missed this story - so it was quite a shock when I read this post about Pat Robertson's call for Hugo Chavez to be assassinated at The Sundries Shack. If it weren't for the fact that I read Jimmie all the time and know that he is quite sane, I would have left a kindly comment to lay off the drugs and alcohol while seeking medical help. However, because of Jimmie's record of dogged and boring sanity, I clicked the link.
And Pat Robertson did say Hugo Chavez should be assassinated:
I haven't read that Hugo Chavez has murdered hundreds of thousands of his own citizens. I haven't read that Hugo Chavez has waged aggressive war upon his neighbors. I think Hugo Chavez is a bit of a nut job, but nut jobs abound. If we were going to whack all the nut jobs we'd have to flatten Hollywood and take out a few of our elected representatives, and Christians don't advocate wholesale slaughter or even targeted assassinations. Look, even if Chavez wants to stop shipping oil to the US altogether, it is not Christian to then decree he must die.
So when did it become part of Christian doctrine to kill people as cheaply as possible? Inquiring minds want to know, you know? Is there a new special revised edition of the Robertson Bible? What, has it been inserted right after John 3:16? John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
????John 3:16a And thou shalt smite those who are your enemies, or those who you suspect might be your enemies, or those who might become your enemies, while it is still cheap to do so - especially if they control a huge pool of oil.????
Surely anyone can see the cognitive dissonance. Then there are those irritating but ineradicable Ten Commandments, including a prohibition on coveting that which is your neighbor's, stealing and murdering. Busting three at one shot. Way to go, Reverend.
It's time for Robertson to repent publicly or retire. Acts 8:18-24. It is not safe at all to do this:

You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war. And I don't think any oil shipments will stop. But this man is a terrific danger and the United ... This is in our sphere of influence, so we can't let this happen. We have the Monroe Doctrine, we have other doctrines that we have announced. And without question, this is a dangerous enemy to our south, controlling a huge pool of oil, that could hurt us very badly. yeah, I blogged on it earlier also. I saw a clip on CNN about Chavez's reaction. He said "I don't know who this man is. I don't care who this man is. But appearantly he has connections with the White House."
