The FloodGate Story
What the Army Corps of Engineers were proposing to do to protect New Orleans was similar to the gates on the Thames and some projects in The Netherlands. QandO has an excellent post up about the project here.
The name is highly appropriate. (floodgates, FloodGate).
It is true that the wetlands of LA are vanishing and the city is sinking because of the flood control projects along the Mississippi River. But that undeniable fact doesn't change the issue of a highly vulnerable city. If we aren't going to restore the river to its original state (and we aren't), then we need to deal with the situation at hand. There is a glaring lack of logic in just wrangling over this matter and never actually doing anything about it.
So now we are going to rebuild this city? Not, I hope, before we get serious about protecting it.
