Betsy Newmark Lays It Out

Betsy looks at Dean's statements on the war in Iraq:
So, first he comes out saying Americans can't win a war that we're in. Is that really the message that the Democratic Party wants to put forth: defeat is the only option? And then he states his vision of what to do with our troops in Iraq.
Dean:
"Bring the 80,000 National Guard and Reserve troops home immediately. They don't belong in a conflict like this anyway. We ought to have a redeployment to Afghanistan of 20,000 troops, we don't have enough troops to do the job there and its a place where we are welcome. And we need a force in the Middle East, not in Iraq but in a friendly neighboring country to fight (terrorist leader Musab) Zarkawi, who came to Iraq after this invasion.
Well, why would there be any friendly country in the region if we cut and run in Iraq? What country can he possibly be thinking of? Turkey already refused, remember? Anyway, they are not the friends of the Kurds. How would those troops in the mythical country fight Zarkawi in Iraq when they were in another country? And what about all the Iraqis who have joined the police and the military? What about the Kurds? What about sanity? Mythical countries and real bodies? You really want to betray all these people? Not enough Iraqis dead for Dean yet?

It's particularly bizarre that the Democrats have to launch this "snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" strategy when the Iraqis are getting ready to vote for their first full national government, which is pretty close to a victory. The aim was to depose Saddam (which Dean says was right but should have been accomplished "in a very different way". Apparently that "different way" resides in the same land of myth where the "friendly neighbor" is located. After that, of course, you have to make sure that the people can establish their own government.

Are all the national Democrats crazy? The policy Dean is recommending here amounts to deposing Saddam and letting the Iraqi people be torn apart by wolves. Is this the country he wants to live in? Dean doesn't want to make a permanent committment to Iraq. Well, that's what countries do with their allies. We will be off the hook when the Iraqi government says we are, and not before.

As for Betsy's first question, I am beginning to feel like the official position of the Democratic party on every issue of importance to me is the same. They seem to believe that defeat is the only possible option for an awful lot of problems. Now I have voted for quite a few Democrats in my lifetime, but I am losing the ability to take this batch at all seriously.

Kerry is a doofus. Dean now appears to be a nutcase. It's time to admit that and move on, for heaven's sake! I wish Lieberman had a even the faintest chance of getting the Dem nomination in 2008, but I realize that's about as probable as Jeb Bush getting it. I can't take much more of this before I acquire an extreme aversion to voting for Democrats. The Dems ought to be riding Dean out of town on a rail for this one.

Comments:
Personally, I'm happy to have Dean, Kerry and Pelosi out there.

Let them relegate themselves into obscurity.

I think of the troops out there and wince. This might be funny if lives weren't at stake.
