Dissent Isn't The Greatest Form Of Patriotism

Mark Steyn points out that Jefferson did not say "Dissent is the greatest form of patriotism." Steyn traces the spurious quote back to Nadine Strosser of the ACLU.

On the other hand, Jefferson certainly believed that governments could easily become oppressive, and he certainly believed that at times people would have to watch their own government for signs of overreaching. Here is something that Jefferson did write:
We established however some, although not all its [self-government] important principles . The constitutions of most of our States assert, that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves, in all cases to which they think themselves competent, (as in electing their functionaries executive and legislative, and deciding by a jury of themselves, in all judiciary cases in which any fact is involved,) or they may act by representatives, freely and equally chosen; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed;
Jefferson did try to write into the Virginia constitution the proposition that " No freeman shall ever be debarred the use of arms." Somehow I don't think the ACLU or Ted Kennedy will be mentioning these quotes. And as for McCain - well, he doesn't even approve of the First Amendment.

Comments:
One thing is for sure- John Kerry was in Vietnam.

It gets a bit murkier after that.

Murky, but always changing.

Have you ever read Iowahawk's Kerry in Vietnam series? It's spectacular.
