Tis The Season To Be Jolly....

Guy plans to attack mall in Rockford. Affidavit on Smoking Gun. Now this is not exactly an Al-Qaeda smoothie, no, this is a home-grown homie who's hangin' at the mosque, a guy who's all like "I just want to smoke a judge..." But I guess he decided to settle for a mall after the informant suggested disrupting Christmas. Not a very bright guy, but it's easy to cause havoc in a mall with a few grenades. He never got close, either. They set him up with a source of fake grenades, and when he took possession the Feds arrested him. According to the affidavit he was all wound up about the "Hezbollah war", and had considered attacking a synagogue earlier this year.

Sort of a funny DU thread on this story here - they start out suggesting that he's a Freeper Dominionist, and then, daunted by the affidavit, decide it's a plot by the FBI:
32. I vote for the latter ...
In other words, we are being figuratively given a "total handjob." The FBI made it clear that they were "wise to" this guy from the first onset of his initial plans. Oh, how much would you like to bet that there's an informant who *fed him* all the steps so that our hapless FEDs can look competent during the Holidays? :eyes:
I don't know. When a guy like that trades his speakers for hand grenades, he's serious. The justice system is not going to agree with DU, because of the judge-smoking part of the jihad plans. Judges don't want to be smoked.

Vancouver Island (Canada) artist crucifies Santa on his front lawn:
A Vancouver Island artist has put an effigy of a crucified Santa Claus on his front lawn, causing some neighbours to complain it’s traumatizing their children.

Jimmy Wright said the figure is intended to be a comment on society’s growing appetite for consumer goods.

"I don’t know how it came into my mind but I thought I’m going to take Santa Claus and I’m going to crucify him."
To me it sounds like he had a few beers too many that night, and he is now enjoying the publicity too much to take it down. Call me cynical, but I don't think crucifying Santa has much to do with global warming. On the other hand, maybe he hangs out at DU and got his inspiration here.

Beth of My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy did a very nice Christmas decorating job, and as always, the content is good. The recent posts on the ISG report are well worth your while.

But all the needless quibbles and the nonessentials fade away for me when I read these words (Thomas Merton, posted by the Anchoress, who has her own comments well worth reading):
At the center of our being is a point of nothingness which is untouched by sin and by illusion, a point of pure truth, a point or spark which belongs entirely to God, which is never at our disposal, from which God disposes our lives, which is inaccessible to the fantasies of our own mind or the brutalities of our own will. This little point of nothingness and of absolute poverty is the pure glory of God in us. It is, so to speak, His name written in us…It is like a pure diamond, blazing with the invisible light of heaven. It is in everybody, and if we could see it we would see these billions of points of light coming together in the face and blaze of a sun that would make all the darkness and cruelty of life vanish completely.
Forget jolliness, it's the season for joy. It's as important to nurture the capacity for joy in a human being as it is to nurture a sense of responsibility. The Vancouver artist and Mr. Judge Smoker are people who have lost contact with their ability to experience joy, and so must ramble through life trying to hammer their anger into the fabric of other people's existences, to make a statement. They are ultimately pitiable, because they are so lost.

Comments:
The 9/11 lot were rather fumbling, to be honest. Who the heck tells their flying instructor that they don't need to land? The difference is that we have gotten more wary.

I agree with you that sooner or later the real deal with show up. My question is whether the real terrorist threat will come from our homegrown populations who have been raised in a culture of grievance?

I am less scared of immigrant Pakistanis than I am of various prison groups. Maybe I'm wrong.
