Jan Grzebski And Ruben Navarro

This Polish man suffered a head injury while working in a rail yard in 1988. He was diagnosed as being in a "coma", and his wife was told that he would not live. His wife was told he also had brain cancer and would not live. She took him home and nursed him all these years. Now he's up and talking, and amazed at Poland's changes:
"He was so amazed to see the colorful streets, the goods," she said. "He says the world is prettier now" than it was 19 years ago, when Poland was still under communist rule.

"I could not talk or do anything, now it's much better," Jan Grzebski, 65, told in TVN24 Television in a weak but clear voice, lying in bed at his home in the northern city of Dzialdowo.
It sounds like another slow recovery story. Doctors think he will be able to walk again relatively soon. In Catholic Poland, he is receiving therapy rather than euthanasia:
"I would fly into a rage every time someone would say that people like him should be euthanized, so they don't suffer," she told local daily Gazeta Dzialdowska. "I believed Janek would recover," she said, using an affectionate version of his name.

"This is my great reward for all the care, faith and love," she told the AP, weeping.

"He remembers everything that was going on around him," she said. "He talks about it and remembers the weddings of our children. He had fever around the time of the weddings, so he knew something big was taking place."
Now for Ruben Navarro, who seems to have been murdered in an LA hospital. You can get the story at Texas Advance Directives and at the LA Times. Ruben Navarro was a severely retarded man who was brought into the hospital in a state of "cardiac and respiratory arrest". The hospital said he could not live, a "dignified death" was planned, and a transplant surgeon was brought in:
At 11:10 p.m., a transplant surgeon ordered 100 mg of morphine and 40 mg of Ativan for Navarro, the report said. The surgeon is not mentioned by name, but several sources confirmed his identity as Hootan Roozrokh.

At some point soon after, Navarro's breathing tube was removed.
Dr. Harold Shipman used dosages of 30 mgs of morphine to kill his patients. This dose should have suppressed Ruben's breathing enough to kill him even if he were healthy. But Ruben didn't die, so more "compassion" was offered:
When Navarro's heart did not stop, Roozrokh ordered another 100 mg of morphine and 40 mg of Ativan, which the ICU nurse administered, the report said.

Navarro still did not die. After about 30 minutes off life support — the time limit set to ensure the viability of the organs — the process was ended.
So in the space of about an hour, certainly less than two, Ruben Navarro was given 200 mgs of morphine and 80 mgs of Ativan - about 7 times the lethal dose of morphine that Dr. Harold Shipman used, plus 80 mgs of Ativan. This guy was killed deliberately. It took him many hours to die, which sure sounds as if neither his heart nor lungs were all that impaired. These doses should have produced a quick death, as morphine depresses the breathing.

Needless to say, the death was ruled a "natural" one by the coroner. This is the reality of medical ethics in the United States. The disabled are getting offed in hospitals, especially if their care is being paid for by Medicare or Medicaid.

Poland gets "prettier", the US gets more thuggish. That's reality. Maybe the transplant center can ask the British government to release Dr. Shipman so that he can come to the US and help the transplant center out?

I took the organ donor thing off my driver's license. I cannot in any way be a part of system that is used to kill the disabled for parts. I wouldn't accept an organ donor either. I know understand why my father refused to even consider a heart transplant; he died of congestive heart failure young, and knew that was his only hope of survival.

We are an utterly amoral society in legal structure, following the path of the Nazis. Bloggers need to stop talking about the Dutch and start talking about the US.

Comments:
Here in Los Angeles, we've had what appears to be radio ads for a euthanasia bill on heavy drive-time rotation for the past few days.

They call themselves "Compassionate Choice", invoke "Terminal Cancer Victims" writhing in pain and "Compassion, Compassion, Compassion", and close with "Don't let THEM take away Your Right To Choose!"

Compassion (TM): The sure mark of the sociopath.

That's how the Nazis did it!!!

I am not sure that Ruben could tell the difference. Instead of the Hakenkreuz (and isn't that a Satanic irony - the Cross of Death opposed to the Cross of Life) and the jackboot, we shall march into our eugenic future wearing our birkenstocks and our Earth Day tshirts.

And oozing Concern and Compassion (TM).

Don't expect any help from Evangelical Christians. They're all up on the roof with their bags packed and their End Time Prophecy charts all marked and cross-indexed.

Just after last election, I got an email from my old college roomie. It was in 14+point boldface, all caps, and started out with "THE COMING ONE-WORLD GOVERNMENT IS HERE!", continued through some rant about the UN, and ended with how he was spending every minute he could in "The Scriptures" with the strong implication that he was just waiting for The Rapture. (Now he was always prone to going off on tangents but this sounds like a Left Behind fever of about 106.)

A recent posting and exchange I found on LiveJournal:

I listened to the message. I wasn't shocked nor surprized. It is as Pastor MacArthur had said. This nation is not under God's blessing or protection anymore. That should had been obvious on Sept. 11, 2001 when the World Trade Center fell under terrorist attack. Even years before that. We are no more the no. 1 nation in the world for anything. Yet, we act like it.

The only thing that is keeping this nation from ending up like Pompeii is those who pray and follow Christ totally. I just hope God hangs off the last wrath so that we can bring more souls to Christ before the end.

Note the hopelessness and despair running through this exchange. All is lost, It's All Over but the screaming, and the only thing we can hope for is "to bring more souls to Christ" before The End. (Note "souls", not people; whatever happened to Resurrection of the Body? The renewed and perfected New Heavens and New Earth?)

I don't get it. I really don't understand how people are managing to maintain the level of long-term pessimism they seem able to sustain.

On any level. Social, economic, etc.

What really gets me is this exchange (and my college roomie's reaction) is basically long-term pessimism with a Christian coat of paint.

In his comment, ringtail1592 mentioned a "Pastor MacArthur"; I think it's the same one from this comment to a comment I made on Slacktivist's Left Behind critique blog:

"The earth we inhabit is not a permanent planet. It is, frankly, a disposable planet—it is going to have a very short life. It’s been around six thousand years or so—that’s all—and it may last a few thousand more. And then the Lord is going to destroy it.

I’ve told environmentalists that if they think humanity is wrecking the planet, wait until they see what Jesus does to it."

-- John MacArthur

Does this guy ever wonder WHY people outside the walls of his church view Christians as some sort of world-destroying death cult? Like Chronicles of Riddick Necromongers without the baroque nightmare-fuel wardrobe and decor?

-- Me

Thank you, John Nelson Darby.
