What Really Matters

Andrew Olmsted was killed in Iraq. He left a final statement, which can be read here, and he blogged here lately - his last post explaining what his unit had done with donations.

Please read his final statement. It even got to DU.

Joel Maxwell should be coming home this month from Afghanistan. I have been praying for his safe return ever since I ran across his blog, along with the more general request for our soldiers. His most recent post on the Iowa caucus exemplifies his approach.

The quality of these two men says more than anything I can say about the quality and worth of our military. One of my brothers keeps saying that the best among us are dying, and I believe he is correct. The question is whether it is worth it? My answer to that question is that to sacrifice individuals of such a caliber is only moral if it will prevent more of such deaths in the future.Countries can't always avoid wars, and when you must fight them, it's best to start early. The history of the future will tell us the answer, and I don't have a time machine. There are legitimate arguments either way.

I just don't want them used as bargaining chips in a political game. They are too good for that. There is nothing that I could ever say, write or do that would convey this message as well as what these two men have written. I urge you to spend a little time on them, and to pray for both their families and for Joel's safe return to his.

Thank you MOM.

Add my brother-in-law to the list. He'll be coming home in March. And that's for sure. As an M.D. he needs to keep his board specialist certifications current and the Air Force knows it.

I will. It's not like I don't pray for them all.

We all cringe at the thought of giving 19 year olds a sports car and he has to ride in the back of a Blackhawk with a teenager at the stick.

Thanks for praying for my husband! He'll be home soon.

Olmsted. Not "Olmstead."
